May 10th, 2013 – 31 Weeks – Baby Shower & Nesting

I just got back from MN a few days ago (I was there for my baby shower, thrown by my dear friends Jen, Jenny & Hillary).  It was so much fun to catch up with family & friends and to celebrate this little life.  I missed Matt while I was gone though, so it was nice to come home and see him again.  I wish he could have come along, but he had to work and we thought it best to conserve his vacation days for after baby arrives.  Hopefully we’ll make it back this summer or fall though, so everyone can meet our new addition.  It was fun getting some one-on-one time with my mom too, and having her be able to feel her granddaughter’s kicks for the first time.  Baby is moving a lot these days.  She’s about 3.5 lbs according to the books.  I really enjoy feeling her squirms and jabs and hiccups.

I am in full nesting mode now.  Baby will be here in only 9 weeks, and there is so much to do that I wonder if it will all get done in time.  We need to put the crib together, install the car seat, make a plan to get to and from the hospital, buy the rest of the stuff we need, wash the clothes, finish my cross-stitch, find a pediatrician, find some maternity clothes, finish our baby classes, practice the breathing techniques, clean the house, cook some freezer meals, decorate baby’s room, fill in her scrapbook…  I know it will all get done if I just focus on doing a little bit each day, but with my nesting instinct in overdrive I want to do it all at once.  I feel really unsettled when her room is still so disorganized.  I still have trouble getting to sleep at night – my body is so restless that even if I’m sleepy or take Tylenol PM I can’t lay still.

We just started our baby classes this week.  They have been really fun & informative.  I enjoy the moments when I catch Matt with a sweet smile on his face.  The other day the instructor talked about the importance of tummy time and skin-to-skin contact with Daddy too, and suggested laying the baby on his chest so she would be able to look at his face.  I could see him picturing it, it was adorable.  No doubt she’ll be a Daddy’s girl.  I have picked up a few tips I had never heard before regarding soothing techniques, and we’re learning Lamaze, breastfeeding tips & infant CPR too which will be handy.  I’m a little nervous about the breastfeeding.  I think we’re going to have a rough start due to the meds I take making baby more lethargic for a few days.  I really want to establish a breastfeeding routine right away instead of having the nurses give her bottles or pacifiers.  But I may not have a choice.

More than anything else, I’m stressed about getting to and from the hospital.  I won’t be allowed to drive myself when I’m in labor, and Matt can’t drive, so we’re probably going to have to ask our nice neighbors to drive us there in our car, and possibly drive us home too in the event that I have a c-section.  It is driving me crazy to not have my independence.  I’ve heard that you shouldn’t drive for 6 weeks after a c-section.  How the heck would we get groceries and run errands without the use of a car for that long?!  I can’t ask someone to be at my constant beck and call for that long.  Becoming a parent is challenging enough without additional hurdles like this.  I hate being completely dependent on acquaintances and making them be on call for me.  What if I go into labor when the neighbors are at work or in the middle of the night?  What if they’re stuck in traffic and I can’t get to the hospital in time, or what if it’s the opposite & I’m forced to go in too early because that’s when it’s convenient for them, and then I end up with a bunch of interventions?  I wish we could just leave when it's time, but what am I going to do, ask people to wait until that happens if they have other plans or work?  And what if I go into labor when Matt’s at work?  We’ll have to figure out a separate ride for him the hospital.  I seriously want to pull my hair out I’m so frustrated.
