We have reached the halfway mark in our pregnancy! Today we had our big ultrasound at St. Joe’s
to check baby’s anatomy development. Baby
had a heart rate of 146, weighed 12oz (normal), and everything looked healthy. Praise God!
The placenta looked to be toward my backside which is good. This makes it more likely that I’ll be able
to have a natural delivery and that I’ll be able to feel the kicks from the
outside sooner. We saw the 4 chambers of
the heart, the spine, little toes curling and uncurling, and baby arching its
neck. Baby wasn’t doing a whole lot of
moving around, just like the first time.
Who knows, maybe if this “womb personality” holds true we will actually
have a calm content baby. We laugh
because knowing the two of us, that seems unlikely.
Baby definitely seems to have kicking patterns – I can
usually count on feeling something in the early afternoon and wee hours of the
morning. I don’t know why, but it was
kicking up a storm the night before the ultrasound around 2am. Matt feel asleep with his hand on my belly,
and not 10 minutes later baby kicked a couple of times right beneath his
hand! I wonder if it was wound up from
all the adrenaline flowing through my body – I was so excited for this
appointment and had been counting down for weeks. It kept kicking for probably a half-hour
which is unusual. I swear I was even
able to feel it from the outside for the first time, it was so strong. It’s pretty
early for other people to be able to feel kicks; first-time dads don’t usually feel anything for
several more weeks at least. Matt
seems disappointed about that, so I hope he can feel it soon.
The tech’s guess at 13 weeks was girl, and she was
right! The tech and dr. pointed out the
3 distinct white lines, which makes us pretty confident that they are
correct. There is always a small chance
that they could be wrong, in which case we are all in for a BIG surprise come
July. We had already started thinking of
our baby as girl so I’m glad the verdict stayed the same – it would have been
weird to start thinking of it as a boy.
We would have been happy with either gender, but I’m really glad I got my
wish of a little girl.
It was endearing to watch Matt as we left the hospital, he
had a gleam in his eye and said he was thinking about a father/daughter dance
song by Steven Curtis Chapman (“Cinderella”).
Just one of the many ways I know he’ll be an excellent father and this
baby girl will have him wrapped around her finger in 2 seconds:
“I’ll dance
with Cinderella
While she is
here in my arms
Because I know
something the prince never knew
I’ll dance with
Cinderella
I don’t wanna
miss even one song.
Because all too
soon the clock will strike midnight
And she’ll be
gone...”
Now I have an incredible urge to shop for nursery décor and
baby clothes…Heaven help us all, it’s going to be hard to resist. I know I shouldn’t buy clothes since everyone
at showers loves to buy those. But now
that my family is coming to visit us for my 30th birthday next
weekend, I’m sure Mom & I will be hitting the stores.
Matt is getting ready to take the Maryland bar exam next week. He has been working so hard to prepare, I
think he’ll do very well. I know we are
both anxious for this exam to be over so he can relax and have more free
time. It’s no small amount of pressure. He hopes
it will be the last bar exam he ever has to take. The results won’t come
in for a couple months, so until he is licensed in MD his project workload
shouldn’t be too heavy.
I feel a little more adjusted to living here now. Matt is thrilled with his job and coworkers,
and we have started to meet people little by little, including several people from church who are close to our age that live close
by and Matt's NFB friends. I hope to be
able to attend another PEO meeting soon so I can develop those relationships as
well.
