Dec 7th, 2012 -9 weeks

It’s hard to believe Thanksgiving is here and gone already.  We spent it in NYC with Brent, his girlfriend Jackie and their adorable dog Dexter.  It was so nice to see family, I have been so homesick and haven’t seen my brother for Thanksgiving in years.  It’s nice that family is only a long car ride away.  Luckily my nausea wasn’t too bad that weekend.  Being in a big city is exciting but all the traffic and noise and lack of green space makes me want to run away and live in a small town.  I’m definitely a suburbia girl at heart.

We had a scare last weekend so we called my OB at 2am and it was suggested we go into the hospital and get a sonogram to make sure the pregnancy was viable (since the only confirmation I’d had so far was a home test.)  Luckily everything was fine and we were even able to see the heartbeat flickering on the screen next to our little blob.  What a relief for me, I had been trying not to get too excited about the baby until I saw a heartbeat.  I kept replaying that sonogram scene from “Marley & Me” in my head when they find out there’s no heartbeat.  In a way it was a blessing to have this scare, because Matt was able to be there for the first sonogram.

I had my first “real” OB appt yesterday.  Our due date was very close to what I originally thought.  I got to see the heartbeat again, as well as the tiny arms sticking out, the yolk sack and the umbilical cord showing red and blue blood flowing to and from the baby.  Neat!  And we got our baby’s first picture.  It looks like a blob, but it’s OUR blob!

My nausea has been pretty rough the last few weeks.  At least I’m not throwing up, but most of the time I wish I could.  I think the worst may be over though - it has been improving a lot the last few days (thank goodness!)  It seems to help when I keep snacks on hand like protein bars, ginger ale and soda crackers.  It does NOT help, however, when Matt likes to suggest foods that sound terrible to me.  I have to tell him to stop naming foods, because all I do is imagine what each one tastes like and then I feel sick.

It seems like almost everything I crave these days is unhealthy.  I am going nuts over salty/brine foods like pickles and green olives, all kinds of cheese, Panera’s broccoli cheddar soup, peanut butter, anything with ketchup and mustard (like cheeseburgers and fries) and I want a corn dog, sushi, and wine/beer like nobody’s business.  Which is odd since I didn’t crave wine & beer that much before I was pregnant.  Now that I can’t have it all I want since Thanksgiving is the Sam Adams Cherry Wheat.  Pine nut hummus was a big deal for me a couple weeks ago, it was like crack.  Now I could care less.  I’ve been a big fan of grapes, frozen fruit, baked potatoes and steamed asparagus, which is healthy at least.  I crave candy when it’s in the house (especially chocolate), but I feel like I get sick of sweets easily.  I thought for sure I would have gained 5 lbs by now, but actually I’m still at my base weight.

I have already started doing research on what to register for.  It’s much harder than it looks – there are so many strollers and car seats and bottles to pick from, and each one feels like a major decision.  I thought I’d really get into decorating the nursery, but now that seems kind of superfluous especially since we live in an apt and can’t paint the walls and there are so many more important decisions to be made other than what theme the nursery will be: which vaccinations do we want?  How do we pick a pediatrician?  What is safe to eat?  What car seat is both safe and able fit in our car?

It is really hard to keep this baby a secret.  We’re trying to wait until after the New Year to make it public so that the first trimester will be over.  So far we have only told immediate family and our closest friends, but I find myself telling strangers all the time because I don’t know what else to say when they ask what I do for a living and I have to explain that I’m not working right now.

I keep expecting to have a lot of hormonal outbursts and changes but so far I haven’t really detected much.  I don’t seem to be any more forgetful or irritable than normal.  So far the nausea and heightened sense of smell are very noticeable, but not much else.  I have however been extremely homesick.  I know I should probably have a better attitude and give Baltimore a chance, but right now all I want is to go back to MN.  My heart just aches addressing Christmas letters to all those MN addresses of our friends and family, knowing it could be a long time before we see them again.  I wish we lived only a few hours away; that would be more bearable.  We haven’t had time to really make friends yet, so it feels like we are completely alone here and that nobody cares about us.  I burst into tears the other day when Matt came home.  He’s been homesick too but not nearly as bad as me.  The only way he could pull me out of my funk was to suggest that we go back to MN for New Year’s.  I immediately brightened at the idea, I hadn’t even known that was a possibility!

I don’t feel like I’m showing yet, but I do hate the feeling of tight pants around my middle – makes me want to stay in PJs all day.  I got a Bellaband but it doesn’t really make jeans more comfortable in my opinion.  I’d like to find some stretchy maternity pants with the waistband that covers your belly but it seems impossible to find anything in my size without going online.  I hate retailers, it’s like they refuse to realize that not everyone is average height and a size 6.  This really isn’t motivating me to want to find a part-time job if I can’t even find comfy professional clothes.

One thing I’m very entertained by is the fact that the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge are pregnant at the same time as us, and may even be due in the same month.  I have always liked them and, like everyone else, got caught up in their magical wedding.  Kate has been suffering from severe morning sickness, it makes me feel so bad for her and grateful that I haven’t had it nearly as bad.
