We just returned from a lovely New Year’s trip to visit
family and friends in MN. It was cold but it
was SO good to be home. We stayed at my
parents’ condo while we were there – I suppose that’s the closest thing to
“home” for us, even though it looks totally different without our furniture
there. We got a chance to hand out with
Matt’s family several days, saw “Les Mis” in theatres, celebrated New Year’s
Eve with the Lindquist’s, and had a delicious lunch with our other friends at
our favorite spot, Crave. The trip went
really smoothly nausea-wise (thank goodness!), though the fatigue knocked me
out. I thought this stuff was supposed
to end around now – sometimes I think it’s just getting started.
As soon as we got back I had my first trimester screen –
it’s a test for chromosomal abnormalities like Down’s and Trisomy 18. I didn’t really want to have it done since
the presence of such conditions wouldn’t affect our decision to continue the
pregnancy. But my OB
basically insisted since it’s non-invasive.
I just wish she hadn’t told me horror stories about a perfectly healthy
couple that found out during that ultrasound that their baby didn’t have a head
and wouldn’t live. Gee, thanks
lady. Besides, wouldn’t they have caught
something that obvious at my first ultrasound?!
Needless to say, everything looked fine – I heard and saw the heartbeat
(154 bpm), two arms and two legs and a head.
We don’t care about the results; I basically consented to it
so that we’d get an extra ultrasound. It
was really neat, I wish I had been allowed to reschedule it so Matt could
attend it but they wouldn’t let me since it had to be done in the next few
days. This ultrasound was WAY better
than the first one. I had a big screen
all to myself to see baby’s movements, instead of craning my neck trying to
share a screen the size of an Ipad with the tech. Baby wasn’t really cooperating for the tech
to get a clear measurement of the back of the neck, but I didn’t
mind since that gave me extra time to watch baby. At one point baby had its
hand up to its ear as though it were holding a cell phone, and a one point was
sucking its thumb – too cute. I’m
surprised how much they move around at this stage – baby’s limbs were waving
about and its feet were up in the air.
Baby is only about 1 oz so of course I don’t feel a thing. Though I do feel like I’m starting to show
just a teeny bit (probably only obvious to me).
Hard to believe our baby already has fingerprints and is as long as a
medium shrimp!
I had heard rumors that some really good techs can tell the
gender even this early (though they can often be wrong because the genitals
still look very similar at this stage).
It’s all about the “angle of the dangle”. I asked my tech if she had a guess, and held
my breath. She told me what she thought,
and after looking at a different angle said she still thought the same as her
first guess. I was able to refrain from
sharing it with anyone but Matt. We’ll
wait until our mid-way ultrasound for confirmation before we tell anyone else,
since her guess could very well be wrong.
I can’t wait to start referring to baby as “he” or “she” instead of
“it”.
Matt broke the news to his firm
today. I can’t wait ‘til he gets home so
we can share it with everyone!!
